Meet Coach Adam: Why the Legends Program Means So Much to Him
At Immortal Athletics, our Legends 55+ Program is more than just a class — it’s a mission. A way to help adults stay strong, confident, and independent through every season of life. And at the heart of this program is someone who knows exactly what it feels like to struggle, to start over, and to prove to yourself that you can do hard things.
This is Coach Adam’s story — and why he’s so passionate about leading our Legends through their own strength journey.
Growing Up With Food as Comfort
“I’ve been heavy for most of my life.” That’s how Adam begins his story. Raised in a loving home where food meant comfort, celebration, and connection, he grew up with the belief that food equals love. His parents were obese, and his mother — a third-generation Italian — cooked rich meals filled with pasta, bread, sauces, and desserts.
For years, Adam battled his weight and his habits. He tried every fad diet, every exercise routine, every “reset.” He lost and regained 100 pounds at least five different times. Nothing ever stuck.
The Lap Band: A Temporary Fix
In 2006, life hit a turning point. Newly separated and raising a young son, Adam decided to get the lap band surgery, hoping it would finally be the solution he needed.
“It worked… for a while,” he says.
But like many quick fixes, it didn’t change the root problem. You can still eat around it. You can make the wrong choices. And sometimes, it led him to the ER when the band’s port got blocked.
After 10 years of relying on the lap band as a crutch — instead of a tool — it failed. The band was removed in 2016, and Adam slipped back into old patterns, heavy again and filled with self-loathing.
2019: The Year Everything Changed
In 2019, Adam walked back into a gym with one more promise to himself: This time will be different.
He hoped. He prayed. He went all in.
And then something life-changing happened — he was introduced to Spartan racing.
A trainer at the gym took him under her wing. She taught him functional training that prepared him for obstacles and for life. She supported him, pushed him, and believed in him when he struggled to believe in himself.
That November, Adam ran his first Spartan Race at Fenway Park. At 245 pounds, it wasn’t easy. He went alone. No cheering section. But when he crossed that finish line, something changed.
“I celebrated with the satisfaction that I could do hard things.”
That moment lit a spark.
Finding His Why
Spartan racing became more than a hobby. It became a mission. A goal to chase. A reason to show up.
Joe DeSena, founder of Spartan, always says: “Have a date on the calendar.” Paired with one of Adam’s favorite quotes:
“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” — Friedrich Nietzsche
His why became clear: his son.
Adam wanted to be the dad his son deserved — strong, resilient, and willing to get back up every time he fell.
Over time, he developed a growth mindset. He learned that success isn’t magic — it’s consistency. It’s doing the work even when it’s boring, uncomfortable, or slow. It’s believing that 1% better, every day, truly adds up.
From Being Coached… to Coaching Others
Adam never forgot how that first Spartan coach changed his life and gave him hope. And then, by what he calls luck, fate, or divine providence, he found himself coaching others — almost by accident.
But it didn’t take long for him to realize this was exactly where he was meant to be.
“I fell in love with helping people realize what I had come to know. Yes, you can do it. No, it won’t be easy. But it will absolutely be worth it.”
Today, Adam weighs 197 pounds — down from 320 when his son was born. He’s not perfect. He still loves food. He still faces temptations. His body still reminds him when he reaches for sugar or processed foods.
But he shows up anyway. He forgives himself when he misses the mark. And he keeps working to be 1% better every day.
Why the Legends Program Matters to Him
Coach Adam’s journey isn’t about six-packs or quick fixes — it’s about showing people their strength, no matter their age or starting point.
He knows what it feels like to think you can’t do it.
He knows what it feels like to start over.
And now, he gets to help others — especially adults 55+ — build confidence, strength, and independence through the Legends Program.
His mission is simple: To help people believe in themselves the way he learned to believe in himself.
Because as he says:
“I’m living proof: yes, you can.”
